Chufa Report!
Here to report on my small experimental chufa plot this year. I started the plot (roughly 1 square meter) with 15 sprouted tubers purchased from Seed World USA. I started the tubers inside, and planted them out in June. As you can see, I got a decent return. I will note that harvest is difficult and messy, especially in my high-clay soil. An interesting observation that I have not seen elsewhere, the fibrous roots have a strong and distinctive smell reminiscent of eucalyptus. I may try them again next year. I will definitely add more organics and sand to the soil. Anyone else play with chufa this year?
I prefer to grow chufa in fiber pots in the ground. It makes it a lot easier to find them all. What are your plans for it?
I like the idea of growing them in buried pots, I think I'll borrow that next year. I haven't quite decided what to do with the chufa I grew. I'll certainly be saving some of them to start next year's crop. I do really like their sweet, coconut-y taste, I will probably try grinding some up and incorporating them with porridges and/or baked goods.
