Garnet Chili was introduced in 1857, a seedling of Rough Purple Chili, a variety that was brought to the USA from Chile (via Panama) in 1853. It had resistance to late blight and so became the progenitor of a majority of American potatoes for the next century. It is high yielding with fair flavor, but its disease resistance is no longer up to date. It flowers
briefly, but reliably, and will produce seed with a pollinator.
