Solanum gandarillasii is a Bolivian species, growing in dry environments.  Plants about six inches tall, occasionally up to a foot.  Stolons about a foot long.  Tubers very small, about half an inch. White flowers.  Berries small and round.

The specific epithet, gandarillasii, honors Bolivian agronomist Humberto Gandarillas.  While there is no completely standardized pronunciation for scientific names, the most common way to pronounce this species is probably so-LAY-num gan-dah-REE-yas-ee-eye.

This species has been tentatively classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (Cadima 2014).

Resistances

Vega (1995) found that this species is less frost tolerant than domesticated potato.

Cultivation

I have found this species difficult to germinate using the standard conditions for S. tuberosum.

Towill (1983) found that seeds of this species stored at 1 to 3 degrees C germinated at 70% after 19 years.
