Solanum mochiquense distribution map

Solanum mochiquense is a lowland Peruvian species of relatively limited distribution. (It is not lost on me that the species is named for a location in Ecuador but is not reported from there.  My guess is that its range probably does extend to Ecuador and I have not yet found the source of that information.)  Plants reach about one and a half feet tall.  Tubers round, white, reaching about an inch in diameter.  White flowers.  Native habitat is sandy soil at an altitude of about 1300 feet (400 m) (Correll 1962).

The specific epithet, mochiquense, refers to Mochi, Ecuador.  While there is no completely standardized pronunciation for scientific names, the most common way to pronounce this species is probably so-LAY-num moh-chee-KEN-see.

This species can survive frosts down to 27 degrees F (-3 C) (Li 1977).
