Dabop is a Cultivariable original variety, introduced in 2018. This is the first result from my breeding work to produce a dark blue/black variety. Dabop is a sort of mottled purple at harvest, but with exposure to light, it eventually becomes completely black. Flesh can be partly purple as well.
Culinary Traits
Both skin and flesh color darken with cooking, with the skin becoming almost black. The flavor is extremely strong and cabbagey. If you like Brussels sprouts, but find them a bit weak for your taste, this might be the variety for you. The cooked texture is soft.
Agronomic Traits
Large plants, reaching more than eight feet on trellis. Moderate yields. Relatively late to bulk. I get my best results with this one around mid-December. Large root balls, right on the edge of what I can pull by hand. It takes a bit of work to separate out the tubers. Color will continue to develop with exposure to light and the tubers become dark purple/black after a few weeks. Poor seed set, but it is possible to get some seeds with hand pollination.
