Blue Spruce is a a Cultivariable original variety, introduced in 2023, from a cross between Jancko Phinu and Cuchipa Ismaynin.  It is a deep eyed variety with a shape reminiscent of a spruce cone.  This is a high dormancy (stenotomum type) diploid potato.

Culinary Traits

Blue Spruce has an all purpose texture with a mild flavor.  It has light yellow flesh.  It is the right size for roasting whole or halved and I think it is delicious prepared that way.  (I cut these in half lengthwise and then roast for 30 minutes at 350 F on a pan lightly oiled with sesame oil.)  Tubers length maxes out at about six inches, but most are about half that length.  The skin is thin and does not need to be peeled.

Agronomic Traits

Blue Spruce is a fully day neutral tuberizer, setting a mature crop in about three months.  Plants are tall and upright at maturity.  The stolons are of medium length, with most of the tubers within ten inches.  At full maturity, on a generous 12 inch spacing, it is possible to get yields of nearly two pounds per plant.  The parents have some resistance to late blight and that also appears to be true of this variety.  Flowering is moderate, but the berry set is very good with a diploid pollinator.  Tuber dormancy is long and should be sufficient for any climate region where potatoes are commonly grown.

True Seed (TPS)

Blue Spruce TPS has so far produced a mix of lumpy and fingerling shapes, with moderate to deep eyes, in a fairly even mix of blues and reds, with the occasional white or yellow. Progeny have shown a mix of short and long day traits.
