Yum Llum is a Cultivariable original variety introduced in 2023.  This is the result of a cross between Yungay and Llumchuy Waqachi.  What caught my eye was that some of the tubers had a very pronounced lumpy, pinecone shape.  Unfortunately, such tubers are rare and most have more of a round, slightly lumpy shape.  Still, there is a lot of potential in making crosses with this variety, because it is able to produce really lumpy tubers, has fairly strong yellow flesh, and excellent flavor.  I am keeping it around to make crosses with some of my other lumpy selections like Kinda Llumpy and Lookin’ Llumpy, and you can follow along by growing this seed.

Culinary Traits

At full maturity, most tubers fall into the 2-6 inch range.  Skin is pink and flesh is yellow.  The flavor is mild and the texture is very floury.  The skin is medium thick.

Agronomic Traits

Plants and large and very late, with late tuber development indicating that this variety prefers short days.  That short day preference is probably what make the really lumpy tubers rare.  In a climate where it could be grown through December, it might surprise with a full yield of large, lumpy tubers.  Yields of two to three pounds with moderately high tuber counts  Plants flower abundantly and for a long period.  This variety appears to be male sterile, but sets plenty of seed with a fertile pollinator.

True Seeds (TPS)

True seed of this variety was open pollinated.  It grew in a block with other progeny of Llumchuy Waqachi and I hand pollinated heavily with progeny out of that variety, such as Kinda Llumpy, Lookin’ Llumpy, and Lookin’ Waqi.  I expect that the seed will produce a lot of seedlings that favor red and that become lumpy under long days.  Hopefully, some of these seedlings will combine red and yellow flesh.
