Wild potatoes almost always produce unsafe levels of potato glycoalkaloids

Solanum candolleanum is an extremely variable wild potato species from Peru and Bolivia.  It is closely related to the domesticated potato and crosses easily with domesticated diploids.  It can have tubers equal in size to domesticated potatoes, but they are generally borne on very long stolons – up to five feet long!  Tubers are often high in glycoalkaloids, but it is possible to make palatable selections of this species.  Plants grow about as large as domesticated potato plants and have abundant and attractive flowers and often interesting speckled berries.  For more information, click on the information and growing instructions link above.
