Solanum colombianum information and growing instructions |
Wild potatoes almost always produce unsafe levels of potato glycoalkaloids |
Solanum colombianum is a tetraploid wild potato, native to woodland areas of Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Plants grow about two feet tall and look quite similar to diploid domesticated potatoes. Relatively little is known about this species and its potential for potato breeding appears to be mostly unexplored. This species is tetraploid but 2EBN, so it will cross directly with domesticated diploids, producing triploid progeny. This is a pretty easy species to grow in my experience and might be a good one for beginners. For more information, click on the information and growing instructions link above.
Plantlet orders will include three different genotypes, which should ensure the possibility of seed production.
