Solanum brevicaule information and growing instructions |
Wild potatoes almost always produce unsafe levels of potato glycoalkaloids |
Solanum brevicaule is a wild potato species from Bolivia. I have found this species to be about as easy to grow as domesticated potatoes and the plants are similar in size and form. Tubers are small, reaching two or three inches at most. They are intensely bitter and not safe to eat due to high glycoalkaloid content, although it may be possible to make selections that are lower in glycoalkaloid content. This species has resistances to many pests and diseases and can be crossed directly to domesticated diploid potatoes.
