Solanum cardiophyllum information and growing instructions |
Wild potatoes almost always produce unsafe levels of potato glycoalkaloids |
Solanum cardiophyllum is a wild potato species from Mexico. Together with S. ehrenbergii, it is known as cimatli. These wild potatoes have been used as food by the native peoples of Mexico, although they don’t appear to have been domesticated. Like all wild potatoes, this species is not reliably edible. Some plants may produce tubers with high glycoalkaloids, which will be bitter and inedible. This is a diploid, 1EBN species that can only be crossed easily with other North American 1EBN potatoes. I more often have tubers than seeds of this species, because the berries are small and contain relatively few seeds.
