True potato seed information and growing instructions |
True potato seeds are classified as breeding seeds and germination is not guaranteed. |
I am offering Inner Secret TPS because it has a singular, unusual trait: the tubers have entirely white skin, but there is a blue vascular ring in the flesh. Normally, potatoes do not have either blue or red in the flesh unless it is also present somewhere in the skin of the tuber. Usually, when I find surprising color inside a tuber, a closer look will reveal a little bit of color in the skin at the stem ends of the tubers. But, you can see in the picture that I have tubers shown from both top and bottom and there is no color in the skin. I hope that, if you grow this TPS, you might find some varieties that have even more color inside otherwise white tubers. This is the only batch of this TPS that I am likely to produce.
Culinary Traits
At full maturity, tubers are mostly in the 2-3 inch range. The texture is to the starchy side of all-purpose and the flavor is pleasant, a little on the sweet side. It browns up nicely when roasted or fried.
Agronomic Traits
Inner Secret is an open pollinated diploid out of Jancko Phinu. Yields are modest, about a pound per plant. Maturity looks to be around 12 weeks. Tuber dormancy is long. It looks like it probably has some scab resistance and late blight resistance is also likely given its parent.
True Seeds (TPS)
True seed of this variety was open pollinated. It grew in a block with other high dormancy diploid potatoes. Since diploids are outcrossers, the seedlings should be quite diverse. I have no idea what fraction of the seedlings might have the interesting combination of white skin and colored flesh, since I have very little experience with this rare trait. It is quite possible that none of the seedlings will have it.
