Phytosanitary information |
Chelachie is a new ulluco variety from the Cultivariable breeding program, grown from seed in 2020 and first offered in 2022. It is notable for its intense yellow flesh, which probably indicates high betaxanthin content.
Because this variety is new, I am still learning about it. Details will fill in as I get more experience growing it.
Culinary Traits
Chelachie has a fairly strong beet-like flavor. This variety has firm yellow flesh, with no noticeable difference between skin and flesh texture.
Agronomic Traits
Chelachie plants are medium size, lacking the long trailing stems of some varieties. They will produce tubers over about a 15 inch radius at maturity. As with most ulluco varieties, the largest tubers are those found directly under the plant, while tubers formed on descending stolons are later and, therefore, usually smaller. Average yield is 1.9 pounds. Maximum tuber length is 4.4 inches. Average tuber length is 1 inch. Like most ulluco varieties, Chelachie forms a large number of small tubers, roughly half of the yield is comprised of tubers of 1 inch diameter or larger.
