Yacon, Breeding Mix, 30 seeds

I only managed to collect a small amount of seed this year, so packets are limited to 1 per customer.

NOTE: These seeds have an unfortunate tendency to get crushed when shipped in regular envelopes, so I don’t recommend that you order them for international shipment.  No refunds if you do and they get damaged.  With the amount of work that goes into producing them, I just can’t eat the cost of damaged shipments.  You can take the chance if you want, but the odds appear to be about 50/50.

True yacon seeds are used to grow new varieties of yacon.  I am really pleased to be able to offer true seeds.  Just a few years ago, yacon was generally considered to be a sterile crop.  We are now several years into the process of selecting new varieties from seed.  You can get in on the fun by growing your own yacon from seed.  Yacon is naturally a hybrid crop, so seed grown varieties are always unique.  You can propagate them from rhizome and establish your own variety.

2020 seed has now come through several years of selection, specifically for earliness, yield, red roots, and yellow/orange flesh.  I grow wild relatives of yacon within the yacon patch, so there is a possibility of wild species crosses in the mix as well.  Keep an eye out for plants with unusual traits – they might be inter-species crosses.

30 seeds.  Expect a germination rate of about 10%, so perhaps three seedlings from each packet.  Some people have done much better than that, which might indicate that we haven’t discovered the perfect conditions for germination yet, or it could just be luck of the draw.  Make sure to read our instructions for starting yacon seeds, so you get the best possible germination.  Bear in mind that 10% is a lot closer to zero than 100%, which means that the odds of getting no germination from a packet of yacon seeds are relatively high.
